What is a World Youth Day?
Pope John Paul II placed his hope in the youth, telling them that “if you are what you should be, you will set the world ablaze!” With this in mind, he began to call meetings of young people to show them that he was their father and that he believed in their future. The first international meeting of youth was held in Paris 1986, and ever since, teenagers and young adults have met together in different places around the world. World Youth Days have been held in Spain, Poland, the United States, Canada, Germany, and other countries. The week of World Youth Day is filled with moments with the Pope, activities for the youth – including catechesis - and access to the sacraments, especially confession.
The next World Youth Day will be held in Brazil in 2013!
